About us:

    Our restaurants have earned countless awards and acclaim year after year.   Chef/owner René Peeters was born in the Belgian Congo to a Belgian father and a French mother; he spent his early years split between the Congo and southern France.  He later lived a number of years in Laos and a year in Greece before moving to the U.S.   While trained in classical French cuisine,  travel has influenced René ’s cooking style. He worked for many acclaimed restaurants across the U.S.  In 1993 he purchased the French bistro "Watel’s" from his friend Damien Watel.    Watel's was started in 1986. The core staff has been the same for nearly 20 years. There were two locations on McKinney Avenue, one on Allen Street, and a few on Greenville Avenue, before the current 6047 Lewis street, in the space formerly occupied by, at first Mike & Felissa's "York Street", and later, Sharon Hage's "York Street".

HANDS ON COOKING CLASSES WITH DINNER
  
  1) We teach your group hands-on how to prepare a multiple course dinner from scratch,

the group then eats the dinner they have just prepared. $600.~ per group includes preparation and class.
Ingredients and beverages are not included in price, they are paid by you at our cost.

2) WITH SHOPPING: We take your group shopping and teach hands-on how to shop/select all the ingredients
and prepare a multiple course dinner from scratch, the group then eats the dinner they have
just prepared. . $800.~ per group includes shopping, transportation, preparation, and class.
Ingredients and beverages are not included in price, they are paid by you at cost at time of shopping.

in a relaxed, casual
home atmosphere.
Chef René takes you to the home of chef Tony, in the French countryside, goes shopping with you, as well as pick goodies from Tony's gardens, then Tony and René teach you hands-on how to prepare a multiple course dinner from scratch, then serves you the dinner you have just prepared. $1200.~ per group includes shopping transportation and time, preparation and class time, and dinner service. Ingredients and beverages are not included in price, they are paid by you at cost at time of shopping. We can help you with lodging arrangements.

4) COOKING CLASS DEMO IN THE RESTAURANT
with four course DINNER

by appointment or when scheduled
Learn to prepare several sauces and variations to serve with a wide
array of meats, fowl, and seafood. Interactive demo with food samplings,
followed be a four course dinner of your choices from our full menu.

My husband and I visited this lovely tiny bistro one cold Thursday evening. What a delight! The food and the service was absolutely fabulous. The coffee press was an added treat as well as the pastry with fresh berries. We will be back.

...I have to tell you all, one of the main aspects of my job is to travel around the country and host dinner seminars for our top clients. Its most important to impress these clients in every way possible, so the venue is CRUCIAL to the success of such dinner events This past Tuesday we were in Dallas so naturally, I called upon Rene and his staff to do the event at his Bistro. NEVER, in the history of doing these dinners, have I received so many emails from the clients RAVING about the meal or our selection of a venue. We had a wonderful meal at Bistro Watel's! The toasts are always welcoming and delicious, the wine is very fairly priced. For salads, we had a ceasar and a thai salad off the blackboard which was amazing. The entrees were scallops (lime & ginger) and steak au poivre, also off the blackboard. All the food was as wonderful as we've come to expect from a Watel's restaurant. The service was amazing. They gave us a palatte cleansing sorbet, and a little bubbly with cookies to top it all off. The atmosphere of the new location is charming and very comfortable. All around a perfect evening!

Oh my gosh! Dinner was excellent and I just love the new space, A LOT!!!! Lisa and I really had a wonderful time. I had liver and the goat cheese fondue. Lisa had shrimp.  I chatted with  the “Johnsons party” that night. After dinner they came over and introduced themselves and said that they too really enjoyed this location.  Rene really has done a fantastic job!

My girlfriend and I were both very impressed with the menu that you offered at your Bistro.  The duck was amazing, fresh, spring-like, and exactly what the occasion and the weather called for.  It was very special getting to be the very first patrons to experience dining on your patio, and your wait-staff could not have been more attentive and pleasant.  In short, the food was great, the service wonderful, and the atmosphere amazing.  Thanks for making our outing a very special Friday night!
